Data validation on the WHOIS

The .UK WHOIS no longer displays the registrant’s name or address, unless they have given permission to do so – all other data shown in the current .UK WHOIS will remain the same. See ‘GDPR Changes’

The data validation status of the registrant is published on the WHOIS.

Where existing data requires validation we will encourage the registrant to update the data either through Online Services or through their registrar if appropriate.

Accredited Channel Partners may choose to confirm to us when they have been successful in validating registrant details for a domain. This will result in the WHOIS entry showing as ‘The Registrar is responsible for having checked these contact details’ immediately, rather than ‘Nominet was not able to match the registrant’s name and / or address against a 3rd party data source on DD-Month-YYYY’ for 30 days from the contact details being flagged as invalid. Accredited partners can explicitly validate the data during this period or, by ignoring the message, implicitly validate them. See the registrar systems instructions on how to explicitly validate your data.

The data validation output will be displayed on the WHOIS as follows:

Validation status Where data has been validated by Nominet Where data has been validated by a registrar by a registrar (Accredited Channel Partner tag)
Validated data Nominet was able to match the registrant’s name and address against a 3rd party data source on DD-Month-YYYY The Registrar is responsible for having checked these contact details
It has not been possible to validate data, or data is awaiting validation Nominet was not able to match the registrant’s name and / or address against a 3rd party data source on DD-Month-YYYY Nominet was not able to match the registrant’s name and / or address against a 3rd party data source on DD-Month-YYYY
