Legacy .UK to new .UK transition
The current .UK lifecycle differs from the future .UK lifecycle; at the point of transition to the new .UK platform in 2026 we propose the following treatment of existing domains; and are seeking feedback by 9th July 2025.
- Add Grace Period: Domains will be transitioned to the new platform such that their add grace period expires precisely 5-days after the create time. This means that domains that have already been added will adopt the new lifecycle as if it were in place at the time of their create.
- Renew Grace Period: Domains will be transitioned to the new platform such that their renew grace period expires precisely 5-days after the renewal command was issued. This means that domains that have already been manually renewed will adopt the new lifecycle as if it were in place at the time of renewal.
- The expiry processes will be reset as follows:
- pendingDelete grace period. All domains that were in their final RFC3915 5-day pendingDelete grace period on the legacy platform will continue with the purge at the same time as on the legacy platform. This means there is no change as the lifecycle matches for these domains on both platforms.
- Deletion for non-renewal on legacy platform. All domains that were more than 75 days past their expiry time will enter the RFC3915 pendingDelete period from the time of transition, with an RFC3915 5-day pendingDelete period; their drop time will be reset based on their new pendingDelete period. These domains cannot be restored and will be purged at the end of the period. This is a shortening of the lifecycle to match the new lifecycle for domains that have failed to be renewed. This will apply to all domains irrespective of the renewal process type chosen by the registrar.
- redemptionPeriod. All domains that were more than 45 days past their expiry time and less than 75-days past are already in redemptionPeriod on the legacy platform and will be placed into redemptionPeriod on the new platform with the end time of redemption period being expiry plus 75 days. This treats those domains as having the maximum auto-renew grace period followed by the maximum redemption period under the new system.
- autoRenew. Any domains that are less than 45 days past expiry time will enter an auto-renew period starting from the time of expiry time; lasting precisely 45-days after expiry. Auto-renew domains will then act as per the registrars chosen system behaviour at the end of the auto-renew grace period.
- Domains which expire from the time of transition forward will follow the new operational processes.
- Any domains that are pendingTransfer awaiting a handshake response from the gaining registrar under the old push transfer system will have their transfer process cancelled. If the registrant wishes to transfer the domain they will need to restart the process utilising the new transfer process.
